Planting & Soil Tips 🌿

We always recommend chatting with your local nursery or landscaper for advice specific to your area, but here’s some helpful info from us to get you started:

Olive trees are super tough!

They’re drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and once they’ve settled in, they’ll thrive with very little fuss.

They like good soil - but nothing fancy.

Free-draining soil is ideal. Think loamy, sandy, rocky or just well-aerated garden soil.

What they don’t like is soggy feet.

Olive’s do NOT like to sit in water. It’s the fast track to unhappy roots and sad trees.

Got heavy clay? No stress.

You can improve drainage:

  • Mix in gypsum and organic matter.

  • Dig a trench out from the base of the hole and line with an ag pipe or gravel, then cover with geo-fabric and soil so the water can escape.

We’ll guide you on the planting hole.

For most of our mature olive trees, we recommend a planting hole around 1.3m wide and 600mm deep. If your hole is dug and ready, and access is good, we might even be able to drop your tree right in the hole on delivery day!

Once it’s in the ground:

  • Backfill with your soil

  • Water deeply

  • Add a feed if you like (Seasol or pelletised organic fertiliser works a treat)

  • Keep up the water regularly for the first couple of months

After that - job done. Your tree is ready to settle in and thrive!
